Mono Jim Ridge and Convict Lake

Looking at Mono Jim and Mt. Morrison peaks

Justin, Ritter, and I decided that last weekend would be a good time to make a trip to the Sierras for some mountaineering. So we loaded up Ruby with our gear and headed out for the 5.5 hour drive to the Sierras. We slept at the Alpenhof Lodge in Mammoth Lakes and then headed just a bit further south on Rt 395 to where the Convict Lake Resort is. Our plan was to climb the Mono Jim Ridge over the Mono Jim Peak and on up to Mt. Morrison. Ritter was a trooper. In some places where he didn't need to have long human legs he actually did better than Justin and I on the loose scree! His four legs and light weight made it easier for him to make his way up the mountain. After about 5 hours of climbing we'd made it three-quarters of mile in and a 1,500 ft gain in elevation. The rest of our intended route looked to be much of the same slow going. So we reversed course, climbed back down, and took a swim in Convict Lake. The water was freezing but super refreshing for the three of us!
